What to do if your handbag is stolen

Print

Handbag thefts are on the increase. This is a very cowardly form of crime that is often focused on the elderly or vulnerable members of the community.  Should this happen to you, then do the following things immediately:

1. Contact the Police immediately Don't be afraid to call 999
2. Look for CCTV If you are in a shop notify the manager straight away as there maybe CCTV cameras in operation which will be of great assistance to the Police.
3. Contact a friend or relative Arrange for them to meet you, as it is good to have someone calm with you.
4. Cancel all debit and credit cards Contact your bank to stop transactions on all cards which have been taken
5. Notify your mobile phone service provider If you have also lost your phone your phone can be locked by your service provider making further usage by the thief impossible.
6. Change your locks Consider your house and car security. If your handbag contains identification (something with your name and address on such as a utility bill) and your house or car keys are missing, then your locks should be changed immediately to avoid unauthorised access If your home or car is burgled and there are no signs of forced entry (because keys have been used) then it is unlikely that your Insurers will be able to pay out on any subsequent claims.

What will we need?

We will need to obtain positive identification from you prior to gaining entry to your home.

There are many ways this can be done and we always do our best to make this as painless as possible, however we have a set code of practice to adhere to - after all you wouldn't want us letting the wrong person into your home would you ?

Your Car:

Most modern cars can only be stolen by use of the keys therefore if your car keys have been stolen too, you will need to get the vehicle locks changed and possibly the vehicles ECU re-programmed to block the old keys from starting the vehicle. We can put you in touch with a reputable local auto lock specialist who can carry out this work on site (as your vehicle may well be parked somewhere away from your home address).  Most main car dealers can also sort such problems , but will make hefty charges to recover the vehicle to their workshop and your vehicle may well be off the road whilst they order replacement locks.
